Six days.

No one thought I could last
Here in the cell—I now call home
They didn’t know I grew up in the prison of my crime family’s dream.

Six weeks.

No one thought I could withstand
The loss, the drugs, the torture
They didn’t know how much I would enjoy their game.

Six months.

No one thought I could survive
Their puppet and prey—but I like to play—Hard.
And I don’t lose.

They picked the wrong guy. Their so-called ‘grunt’ would fight to get home and take revenge. I vowed to come back—for her—for Kaci. But everything changed.

My maniacal mind wrapped with a pretty mug, I am an unforgiving opponent, tough—tougher than they ever imagined.

And I will never – ever – break.

Review:

This was a really good romance.
I really enjoyed the characters but I have to say Shane was my favorite. He really was the “bad boy” but really changed in the book.  The end was different than I was thinking it would be but was better.

Description:

Cara Rossi’s life has been a mess ever since her identical twin was killed. She blames the mafia, its ways, and the people within the caustic culture for a painful reality that turned her world on its side. In an attempt to momentarily pause her misery, a night out puts her on a path with a man she shouldn’t get involved with simply because of his last name—Gian Guzzi.

He’s the kind of man that makes it hard to say no.

Gian Guzzi’s problems are piling up fast. A murdered grandfather, an unpredictable mafia, and a new boss that threatens both his family’s legacy and his life. As a Cosa Nostra underboss, Gian has a duty. First to la famiglia, and only then to himself. In the midst of the violent uncertainty that has become unrelenting in his days, Cara Rossi should only be a distraction for him to enjoy.

She’s a happiness that he was never allowed to choose before.

His lies.
This life.
Their love.

It all unravels eventually.

Excerpt:

“So …” Bambi said, drawing the word out for much longer than what was necessary.

Awkward.

Finally, Cara’s mouth decided to play catch-up with her brain, and work. All she managed to say was a confused, “So.”

Bambi didn’t look offended over Cara’s lack of response to her presence, never mind her lack of enthusiasm at conversing like a normal human being. No, if anything, Bambi looked happier, her smile growing all over again.

And then Cara had to go and open her mouth to ruin it with, “What exactly are you doing here?”

Bambi’s smile vanished instantly, replaced by a hurt dancing over her pretty features. “I’m sorry. Am I not allowed to visit a friend?”

First, Bambi had always been more of a friend to Lea than Cara, for the most obvious reason … being Bambi’s lifestyle. For lack of a better word, Cara thought.

She could be brutally honest—Bambi liked her made men. Mafia men were just her thing.  But the second reason why Bambi should not be knocking on Cara’s door?

Cara looked at the clock on the wall. “It’s eleven-thirty at night.”

Jesus. Was it really that late already? Hadn’t she been talking to her brother that afternoon?

Well, shit.

Cara had literally slept her day away. She’d missed another round of classes. An exam. An assignment that was due. A lecture.

And she needed groceries.

Fuck.

She was a mess.

She didn’t even know how to go about fixing it. Or even if she wanted to.

Bambi only stared at Cara as though she had suddenly grown a second head in the span of seconds. “What are you talking about?”

Cara pointed at the clock. “It’s late.”

“Yeah, if you’re fifty.”

“I have school in the morning.”

Bambi cocked an eyebrow. “Tomorrow is Saturday, and I remember Lea saying once that you don’t have classes on Saturdays.”

Was tomorrow Saturday?

What was happening to her life?

Cara rubbed a hand over her face. “What do you want?”

“I was in the neighborhood. I thought you might like to see a familiar face.”

“You thought wrong.”

Cara could have softened that blow, but she didn’t have the patience to. Bambi didn’t seem all that offended. In fact, she looked as though she had expected that.

“Yeah, seems I’m not the first person you’ve chased off with your nasty attitude lately. People talk, and others tend to take notice and listen. I know we’re not the greatest friends, but your sister looked out for me a lot, and I’d like to think that Lea would be super pissed at me if I didn’t offer the same to you.”

Cara cleared her throat, more uncomfortable than ever. “I’m fine.”

“Well, that’s a lie.”

“Bambi—”

“You look like shit just came over and took another shit on your head.”

Ouch.

“Okay, that’s enough,” Cara said, grabbing the door to close it in the woman’s face. “It’s time for you to go.”

“Wait.” Bambi put her body into the doorway, effectively stopping Cara from closing her out. “One night, Cara. You can take one night to get out of this apartment, away from this …” Bambi waved at the darkness behind Cara. “Whatever this mess is, and do something. Maybe it’ll be fun. Maybe you won’t have to think for a while. Maybe you’ll even smile. What would it hurt to try?”

It could hurt a lot.

“I’m not even dressed or done up,” Cara said weakly.

Bambi smiled slyly, gesturing at herself. “That is why you have me.”

“I can dress and do my own makeup, thanks.”

“And I will be right here to make sure you actually do it. A new club opened up three blocks away, last week. I happen to know the owner is a great guy, and throws an awesome fucking party. Give it a chance.”

Cara was too mentally tired to argue. Or maybe it was that she wanted to feel normal for a minute. Even if that meant using alcohol and deafening music to do it.

That was that.

“All right,” Cara said. “Give me fifteen minutes.”

Bambi looked her over. “Twenty, at least.”

“You could be nicer.”

“You could look less dead.”

Bitch.

This is my introduction to Sidney Valentine and her writing style. So I had no idea what I was in for. I found this book to be well written and developed. The story idea of environmental issues is a new one for me, but very important to me personally. I did struggle reading this book and I am not really sure why. I did try rereading some just incase I had missed the grab me moment, but just could not get totally into this book, I really wish I could have. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Unless she proves herself and wins that promotion, she’ll lose so much more than a pay rise. Yet everything goes wrong the moment she lands in the outback. With no research equipment, only skimpy clothes packed by her best friend to help her score a date, and a tight deadline to submit her report, she’s screwed. So when a sexy cowboy offers to play chauffeur, she’s all over it. But she’s there to shut down the mining activities, not fawn over the guy who’s supporting them, no matter how sizzling the attraction between them.

Billionaire jackaroo, Sam Preston tempts fate as an adrenaline junkie, living each day as if it were his last. Angry and wounded, he’s in town to sell his cattle ranch to the local mining company and be done with his past–until he meets hapless city-chick Affrica, who has no clue about surviving in the desert. Sam doesn’t know how to stop being a daredevil even though Affrica reminds him of the happiness he once had.

Can Sam let go of the past before he loses the one person who’s finally breathed new life into him, or is it not possible to truly tame a jackaroo?

Description:

Born into rival drug cartels, Kevyn Zozlov and his best friend Esperanza Torres defy the odds, finding laughter in a world full of pain. Ripped away from her at a young age, Kevyn has to learn the difference between family, loyalty, and obedience. Fear keeps him focused each day. Memories fill his dreams at night.

Torn between the death he sees daily and what he believes is right, he struggles to decide the kind of man he wants to be—until a promise he makes to his mother, the person he loves more than anyone, changes everything.

“Get out of here and find Esperanza. Promise me.”

Now, Kevyn has to figure out how to make his way to the only friend he ever had—the one person who understands his damaged world. Will she welcome him back with open arms, or turn him away, leaving him more lost than he already is?

With time against him, can he find Esperanza and his happiness, or will he be another casualty of the drug war, buried in an unmarked grave with no one to mourn his loss?

Excerpt:

My fourteenth birthday started with screaming, “I want to see my son.  He would never ask for this.  Kevyn!  Kevyn!”

My father was screaming for me?

The hopeful boy in me that had always prayed he would love me ran out of my room and down the stairs.  He was in the cage.  I stared at him in confusion.  Looking back at me was nothing but hatred.  Still.  He didn’t need my help.  Didn’t want it.  He wanted me to see how much I disgusted him.

“You fucking bastard!”  He screamed.  Spit flew from his mouth.  As usual, he was high.  “How dare you wish this for your birthday?”

Tagline: SAFE HAVEN is book 2 of the Heroes of Providence series which began with Kirkus Reviews Best Book of 2012 MATERIAL WITNESS.

Description:

When someone you once loved wants you dead, is there any SAFE HAVEN?

Finding out her ex-husband hired a hitman to kill her didn’t leave Daria Carlisle all warm and fuzzy. But Detective Kevin Gordon’s suggestion she flee the only home that had ever truly been hers was downright crazy. Forget that the sexy police officer made her heart pound and her blood stir. She’d worked too hard to get what little she had. She wasn’t leaving.

Kevin Gordon didn’t make mistakes, but he’d made a big one in letting Daria’s ex slip through his fingers. Although he tried to make it very clear to Daria that the fixer upper home she considered a palace was no safe haven, she just dug in deeper and insisted on staying, leaving him no choice but to be her protector. Left on her own, she surely faced murder at an assassin’s hand. But can Kevin spend every waking hour sleeping on her doorstep just to keep this stubborn woman alive without risking his heart to love?

Excerpt:

“Your husband hired me to kill you.”

The last words Daria Carlisle expected to hear in her kitchen on a bright and sunny Sunday morning were those. She stared at the man who’d just uttered the frightening words. Words spoken with such ease and comfort it made her blood run cold.

She stood statue still, almost glued to the aged linoleum floor that was too frail to be salvaged. Her gaze swept from his face to the decrepit floor as she dragged in a breath of air. Earlier that day she’d been obsessing over how she was going to afford replacing the linoleum. Hearing these words from a man she’d just invited into her home willingly put a slightly different spin on her priorities.

Your husband hired me to kill you. The words just hung there in the air between them like some bright red cartoon balloon, mocking her.

Review: Falling For Her Brother’s Best Friend, by Noelle Adams Reply

Review:

This was my introduction to Noelle Adams, and it was an awesome introduction. I love finding new authors that I can add to my TBR list. This novel reads more like a novella. This book grabbed me by the fifth page and did not let go until the last page. This book is about “three girls that become friends because their brothers are best friends”. Emma and Noah are not the ideal couple, but can they over come the odds? You will have to read to find out. I liked that there is several sub-plots in this story line that I hope the author is going to explore in the next books in this series. I look forward to the next book and can’t wait. I recommend this fun, fast paced, entertaining read.

Fifteen years ago, three girls were thrown together because their brothers were best friends. Now they’re all grown up, and their brothers are grown up too. The Tea for Two series tells their stories. Fans of contemporary women’s fiction will become engrossed in this new series by New York Times Bestselling Author, Noelle Adams.

Description:

After too many bad decisions in romance, Emma is going on a man-fast. For the next six months, she’s fasting from men. No sex. No dating. No soulful gazes. No fond memories of her first crush. She’s going to spend the time focusing on her career, getting in touch with herself, and helping her two best friends with the launch of their new tea room. No men.

And that includes her brother’s best friend, Noah Hart, who has just returned to their hometown.

She doesn’t want Noah anyway. He might be even hotter than he was before, but he’s not a nice guy anymore. He’s made a fortune by acting ruthless in business, and the last thing he’s looking for is small-town domestic life. He doesn’t even want to be in town again, but a sick grandmother guilted him into it. Then he has nerve to not even recognize Emma when he sees her again. Maybe it’s been seven years, but a decent guy would remember his best friend’s little sister.

Noah is not a decent guy. Anyway, Emma is on a man-fast. And she doesn’t want Noah.

At all.

Excerpt:

She waited to see if Noah would complain about her walking home alone at night, but he didn’t. He just said, “I’ll walk with you.”

She started to object—automatically but for no particular reason—but she stopped the words from coming out. There was no reason he couldn’t walk a couple of blocks with her. He would probably insist on it, even if she tried to object.

“Okay,” she said. “Thanks.”

They didn’t speak as they walked down the sidewalk and crossed the street to her building. But she was intensely aware of Noah’s presence beside her. It felt so strong, so masculine, so… man.

Why the hell did she always seem to want him so much?

She should know better by now.

She was feeling strangely shy when they reached the front entrance to her building, and she turned to face him, dropping her eyes. “Thanks again.”

“No problem.” There was that husky note in his voice, the one she really liked.

She didn’t dare to look up at him. “I could have made it on my own, you know.”

“I know that.” God, just the sound of his voice sent shivers up and down her spine.

“No matter what you think, I’m not a little girl anymore.”

She had no idea why she was saying this. She was just rambling, too nervous to think through the words that were coming out of her mouth. And she was seriously having to hold herself back from reaching out toward him, taking hold his shirt and pulling him closer.

He smelled so incredibly good. Not anything as strong as aftershave, but something warm and expensive.

She wanted to smell him even more.

She wanted to feel him.

She wanted to taste him.

She wanted to…

He reached out and tilted up her face so she was looking at him. “I know you’re not a little girl, Emma.”

Emma.

He’d called her Emma.

“You do?” she whispered, the world shuddering in front of her eyes.

“Damn it, Emma,” he rasped thickly, raising his other arm so he was holding her face in both hands. “Surely you know I’m seeing you as anything but a little girl.”

She was trembling now, and there was absolutely no way she could hold herself back. He was holding her face like she was precious, and the look in his eyes…

So filled with heat and hunger. She’d never seen anything like it.

She grabbed onto his shirt like she’d always wanted to and drew him even nearer, and then he was finally, finally kissing her.

Naturally, she was kissing him back.

Review:

This book was gifted to me by a friend. The author was new to me, but no longer as I enjoyed this story so much that I will definitely be reading her first series and then the next books to come out in this series.
Set in Medieval Scotland and Ireland, this is the story of Mangus MacAndrew and Catriona Butler. As Laird of Clan MacAndrew, Mangus wants nothing more than what is right and in the best interests of his Clan and his Country, especially after past regrettable actions when he sought revenge against the murderers of his father and brother. After those actions, he vowed to never allow emotions to cause him to act rashly in any situation. He had been doing an admirable job of it while running his ship building & sea merchant businesses for several years, but when another of his ships fails to return home after too many days away, he fears the worst. When his fears are realized, he feels his vow to remain in control slipping. He suspects a rival Italian sea merchant is to blame despite reports to the contrary.
In the midst of this, his sister’s best friend from Ireland, Catriona Butler, has received word that her brother and father have been taken prisoner in Ireland and payment is being demanded for the release of her brother. Catriona is torn between remaining at her safe haven with the MacAndrew Clan and going to save her brother.
The two events bring Mangus and Catriona together to face their enemies, as each tries to do what’s right by everyone but themselves. With so many obstacles it seems an impossibility that everything will work out, but thankfully, neither gives up.
I loved the heartfelt stories being told by the author and the many characters involved. I look forward to reading more of her books.

To Support a King ~ Book One
Plagued by atrocities he committed against innocent victims while pursuing his father’s killers, Laird Mangus MacAndrew pledged to defend and provide for his clan. But his leadership is tested when two of his ships are attacked and his crews massacred. Desperate to fulfill his obligation to protect the clan, Mangus agrees to help reinstate The Turnberry Bond. His mission—garner support for the Bruce and avenge the deaths of his men.

The MacAndrew clan provides Catriona Butler something her Irish home could not, a safe haven. But when she receives a missive her brother is imprisoned and will be executed unless acceptable éraic can be obtained, she must return to her homeland.

Mangus agrees to take Catriona to Ireland and vows she will not become a distraction, but he longs to be near her. Catriona witnesses Mangus’s fierce anger and grows distrustful. After a life of suffering her father’s vicious temper, she is skeptical of anyone with a penchant for violence. She attempts to keep her distance, but her traitorous heart pulls her in Mangus’s direction.

With the fate of the kingdom on his shoulders, will Mangus reunite the men of The Turnberry Bond? Can he pursue vengeance against his enemies without taking more innocent lives? And can Catriona free her brother and grow to trust Mangus, staying true to her heart?

About The Author:

Starting out as an accountant in line with the rest of the corporate echelons struggling up the proverbial ladder, I soon realized the long nights and numerous weekends of closing books and reporting financial results no longer appealed. So, I decided to hit the road selling financial software. Jumping from one high-pressured frying pan into the other, the stress of the road-warrior life and constant deadlines took its toll. I needed a release and found that with my face buried in historical romance books, I could escape to worlds of intrigue with timeless love and happily-ever-after-endings. Today, I am fortunate to have found my true passion in writing of spirited heroines and to-die-for-heros and the romantic love stories between them.

I am a southern girl living on top of a mountain in North Georgia, and I’m most happy when surrounded by family and friends. If I am not writing, you can find me hiking with my husband, or fiddling around in my flower and vegetable gardens, feeding the birds and watching black bears and deer. I am blessed to have a wonderful son—my pride and joy, my buddy who, along with my husband, have made my life complete.

Review:

When I read the blurb for this book, I knew I picked a winner. My interest in the story was so good I read all night, okay two hours of sleep. Hey I just couldn’t put the book down. Reading about strong women who won’t change for anyone is my kind tale. What a roller coaster ride with great action, misunderstandings, secrets, and blackmail. Less not forget the murder and spicy romance. Fans will be very entertained with this historical romantic suspense and yes there is surprise at the end.
